Smaller and inexpensive drums might be cheaper and easier to cart around but they are not always the best option. As an adult, your hands need room to learn all the different striking techniques and trying to play a djembe that is too small will definitely work against you.
A great way to find the perfect size for your djembe according to your body, is get a feel for it by playing it straight way. Most djembe players find sitting in a chair and playing the most comfortable position. Their feet (barefoot is best) are placed firmly on the floor, offering enough grip to keep the djembe anchored between the feet and the knees. Some drummers also play with their legs crossed – you just have to find what’s comfortable for you! When playing, the djembe is slightly tilted forward to allow for maximum sound to escape the instrument.
When sitting in a chair, the ideal drum size for you would be if the drum head is about 6-8cm above your knees. If it’s any lower, your knees will be an obstacle when you’re playing. If it’s higher, your arms will be raised uncomfortably high and your shoulders will get sore after five minutes of playing! Like any instrument, a drum will be part of your life for a very long time. So try out several drums before you choose one. As for cost, a decent drum, depending on size and timber used, will cost you between $200 and $1000. If you buy it from a reputable drum maker, it will last you more than a lifetime, so choose wisely! In a local drum maker you will also have someone who can tune and re-skin your djembe as needed.
