Djembe drum-making on the Sunshine Coast!

NEW drums are getting some love this week, new skins, polished wood and fitted rings…a delivery of skins have arrived and ever since Nathaniel has been working hard, cranking, stretching, welding and pulling. They are looking absolutely beautiful and there is nothing more exciting than welcoming a bunch of new handmade drums! There were a few rings that needed adjusting but overall it has been a pretty smooth process…I don’t know how we manage it but every time the drum skinning begins it seems to rain for 5 days! This has been the only set-back. The photos as you will see are taken under the mango tree, Nathaniel has chosen this spot in particular as he says this takes him back to Africa “everything gets done under a mango tree.” This made me smile. Our Kelpie dog seems to be the only one not happy with this line of work.. she is convinced there is a live goat lurking somewhere and has spent the past 5 days on high alert…very entertaining. Keep an eye out for our upcoming newsletter for August, we will have a special feature on the nature of drum-making!  email info@rhythmculture.com.au to subscribe. Enjoy!
