Last week we had the opportunity to visit NCC Buderim to share drum sing dance with children in kindy and pre kindy groups. The centre was providing the children with a drum sing dance incursion to help support their learning around different cultures and music.

With a welcoming group of warm and engaged educators, we explored music in West Africa. We clapped, sang, shook and grooved to the beats of the dunduns and djembes. Every child played a drum and got the chance to explore different percussion instruments for West Africa. We explained how people can learn the drumming and dancing without speaking the same language and we explored the beauty of call and response.

When we explained to the children that they need not be quiet in this session they gave it all they had with big loud voices and dancing bodies. We highlighted that when learning different cultures around music you have the freedom to engage in activities that are not so common here in Australia. Dance solos were an absolute highlight at the end with every child giving it a go.

Children are always wide eyed and excited when we share how Guinea, West Africa share music within the community. What a place to share drumming, singing and dancing in the streets whilst blocking off the traffic!!

Thank you for having us NCC Buderim. It was an absolute joy sharing rhythms , music and culture with your children last week. Ya Ya!!
