This easter school holidays we visited the Virginia State School OSHC in Brisbane as part of their vacation care program. This was our second visit to Virginia State School and this time we did our ‘Get Down and Ghana’ incursion which is a program that uses the cultures of the Twi, Ewe, and Ga people from Ghana, West Africa.
GET DOWN IN GHANA!
This workshop was for the junior kids, as the senior senior kids had gone out for an excursion. We started the workshop by singing a very well-known song that is played with the Kpanlogo rhythm. The kids did a really amazing job getting into it and singing the beautiful Melodies of Ghana. We then did the dancing part. It always amazes us how much kids love to do African drumming, singing and dancing. This group in particular was really into it.
GROUP EDUCATORS MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE
We believe that groups are also really influenced by the team members and educators that are looking after them. The more open and fun the team members and carers are being in the sessions, the more the kids respond to that and have a similar attitude. It’s always so much fun when the group carers get involved! For all of our incursions we use a similar simple model, if we are excited and into it then we can be sure the kids are going to get excited and get into it too. We love drumming, singing and dancing. It’s the best job ever! It helps when you love what you do!!!
IT’S THAT MOMENT WHEN THEY ALL GET IT!
A real highlight of this group was watching the kids really concentrating and trying to move their feet and clap their hands at the same time. This was challenging! Then, seeing their response to the song that they had created all at the same time. Such a joy!
It was a such a great visit once again in Brisbane at the Virginia State School for an easter school holiday vacation care incursion! We look forward to seeing these children again soon!!
