This time we were visiting dance students of St Michaels College in Ashgrove, Brisbane for a very specific African dance incursion. We always get super excited in creating programs and classes for colleges that are needing to incorporate their learnings into a final piece of work. Usually, with the dance this involves creating a fusion piece with their already contemporary style.
“Ultimately, we are looking for a 2-3 minute African dance piece for the girls to perform for assessment or the opportunity to fuse African dance sequences learnt with a guest artist with jazz or hip hop movement technique.”
The girls were so enthusiastic about the African dance incursion and absolutely loved the rhythm Macru and the African dance moves were very playful and fast paced. The group nailed the choreography as well as performing some beautiful impromptu solos! The African dancing was an absolute hit with the students and they enjoyed it immensely. One student even said “this is my new favorite dance style!”
We provided the class with some links to the rhythm and they filmed the choreo so they could work on it for their final piece. We had some brilliant feedback which is always so lovely…
“The workshop was absolutely fantastic! It was fun and challenging and pitched at a perfect level for our year 9s. They loved our workshop leader, the movement and the way the teaching of rhythm and characteristics of style was woven into the instruction and discussion. The African dance sequence was a great length for our girls and their assessment this term.We will definitely have you back next year!”
Thanks again for having us St Michaels College in Brisbane!! See you soon!!
