Rhythm Culture bring drumming and dancing to Iona College on Tamborine Mountain at QCCC for their annual year 11 college wellbeing retreat.

This was our second visit for the year with Iona College. Last time we were bringing some high energy drum and dance to their staff retreat. This time we were visiting the college not in Brisbane but on Tambourine Mountain for their annual Year 11 retreat.

The Focus

The focus of the retreat was based on wellbeing, focus, spirituality, community and leadership. We used our school incursions as our foundation and of course created a program on top for Iona College Retreat.

The Program

The venue was the QCCC. We have run workshops at many of these venues in the past and they are always in a beautiful surround with an easy access and load in. We had 8 workshops with each workshop running for 30mins. There were appx 27 students in each session. We split the sessions up into a really fast paced high energy WOW factor with the students beginning on the drums and then getting up for the dance. Again, because we taught the rhythm first on djembe, the group ran through the dance choreography quiet quickly.

Unforgettable

We would have to say that this day with these young men was absolutely unforgettable. The boys were incredibly enthusiastic, engaged and keen to learn. Everyone got really into it and encouraged one another. Their energy was super high and this was evident in their big voices, their motivated dance moves and their ability to get up and have a go at our leadership activities.

The staff on board at the college retreat were so accommodating and helpful and the students were an absolute blast to teach! An absolute joy and can’t to see them all again soon!!
