West African Drumming Workshops & Classes
Rhythm Culture provides educational workshops for students of all ages. These workshops are specifically designed to inspire and create a greater sense of community. Each student will have a drum and the the opportunity to engage with those around through traditional West African rhythm, song and dance. Rhythm Culture provides a musical and cultural experience for the students of Queensland and introduces an indigenous art practised by many ethnic and western people all over the world. Nathaniel Combs will share his stories of living and studying with master musicians and ballets in West Africa, along with his knowledge of traditional song and language in French, Malinke and Susu. These interactive workshops are truely a unique and authentic way to bring students together through music, story and song. Rhythm Culture currently provides workshops for councils, schools, Active After School Care and youth and disability organisations all over QLD. All workshops include drum hire, costume and facilitation. We are currently taking bookings for 2012. Please contact us for more information.
“We recently held a series of Drumming workshops for kids at The J and Lake Kawana Community Centre during the Christmas holidays. The kids had a great time learning about the drums and playing them, and quite a few of the parents thought it was so much fun, they decided to join in as well. Nathaniel ;is a great musician and presented the workshops really well. Rhythm Culture will be presenting more workshops at the venues in the next school holidays.”Anita Freed – Performing Arts Curator,Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

Rhythm Culture Team Building Workshop in Mackay during our FNQ tour 2012
Thanks to Rhythm Culture for a wonderful workshop this morning! Highly recommend for anyone with lots of energy who like to make a bit of noise! Fabulous array of djembe’s and other interesting instruments and activities kept the kids busy and happy Little Musos, The J Noosa
A big thank you for this morning’s workshop … in the words of my grandsons “it was the most fun they have ever had”. Even the ‘old girl’ had a great time. You have a gift for making it so interesting and inspire everyone to join in. Not sure that I should do that much jumping at my age but what the heck Jan Waghorn, Lake Kawana
After my drummimg lessons with Nathaniel I’m left ‘buzzing’ all the way home. A very patient, tolerant & understanding teacher and great with the kids too! Love it so much that now four of my clients attend the 10 wk course. I bought my djembe recently off Nathaniel and he helped me in every way possible. What great fun!!! Denise Curry, Red Faery Hair, Woodford
Come along and pick up on the vibe. Nathaniels enthusiasm is contagious. Before you know it you will be grooving like you were born to do it Justin Shute, Mapleton
Great chance to meet new people in a friendly, fun, relaxed atmosphere whilst learning new things Caroline Mcdonald, Mapleton
Nathaniel is a great teacher who has a relaxed yet focussed approach to teaching. He always brings fun and lightness to his classes. He is very approachable and takes great care and patience to impart the rhythms to his class. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning drumming from him Sudeshana Brough, Maleny
I really appreciated your style of teaching and the way you managed to get such a large group involved in a way that was inclusive of everyone’s ideas and embraced their creative input. It’s hard to find teaching artists in this area that have these qualities and are also knowledgeable in their field and can find ways to work effectively with the kids to produce an original and inclusive performance outcome. Kathleen Mitchell, Program Coordinator – The Song Room
Nathaniel provides exciting and innovative performing arts programs for refugee and migrant young people. His African drumming sessions are lively, colourful and full of enthusiasm. It is magical to see Nathaniel’s drumming bring youths from different cultures to sing and dance. Nathaniel has a special way of connecting with young people and his popularity is seen by the large exciting sessions he runs. Diana Nguyen, Acting Coordinator – Southern Ethnic Advisory and Advocacy Council (SEAAC)
We are in search of visiting/touring performances and workshops all of the time and it is difficult to find affordable, quality experiences. Kim Piper, PCYC
Rhythm Culture’s workshops were exciting, inspiring, and extremely well received. Nathaniel was adept at adjusting the content of the workshops to suit the audience, and clearly worked very hard through them all. Feedback from customers and staff was overwhelmingly positive. We look forward to hosting further workshops by Rhythm Culture in the future. Donna Kellion, Mackay
