In November, our friend, special guest and master dance teacher Naby Bangoura visited us for an inspirational performance and dance workshop. We teamed up with the funky folk at Nook & Cranny in Nambour and held a great performance on Saturday night with a bunch of local musicians, and Naby on djembe.

Naby Bangoura is one of those people who make everything he does, look easy (especially dishing up his hot chips to our kids).

For those of you who have been dancing and drumming with us at Rhythm Culture, you’d know how intertwined dancing and drumming is. The two are simply inseparable and especially evident when our students and dancers take the floor together. When it all comes together and our djembes start to sing and the dance moves start to flow, what we have is a delicate yet expressive fusion of rhythm and movement that tells stories older than we can imagine. It’s exhilarating to say the least and we love nothing more than when we are all able to put a bit of ourselves into special events like this.

We loved watching Naby display his incredible poise and sense of excitement during his performances and the Sunday workshop – qualities that have made him one of the industry’s best West African dance teachers.

At our home in Palmwoods, Naby was especially kind and gracious with our children Emiel and Elijah. They both adored him and the kids totally loved his cooking! Naby has two children almost the same ages as our boys and we could tell he missed them dearly. After his weekend visit to the Coast, he returned to Melbourne to teach for Camp Samatou with our good friends at Melbourne Djembe.

If you’d like to find out more about Naby and his work as Adjuct Dance Instructor at the University of San Fransisco, please go to www.usfca.edu.

Last but not least, our thanks to everyone who made the Naby Bangoura weekend a great one. They are the Rhythm Culture artists, the Muso Foli dancers, our students for a fantastic performance, all the staff at Nook and Cranny and of course, everyone who came to listen, watch and boogie the night away.
